New York and Singapore, 11 March 2025 —The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Centre for Impact Investing Practices (CIIP), has finalized a cohort of 31 enterprises that will take part in the SDG Venture Scaler. This programme is an accelerator and deal-brokering initiative designed to mobilize private sector investment towards addressing critical challenges in climate action, health care, and education across Indonesia, the Philippines, and Viet Nam. View the finalists here.

The cohort leans heavily towards climate action, with over 60 percent of enterprises addressing climate-related issues. Industries represented in the cohort include clean energy, AI-driven waste management, fintech, edtech, the circular economy, EV mobility, and mental health. Twelve enterprises operate in Viet Nam, 10 in Indonesia, and six in the Philippines, while the remaining three enterprises cover all three markets.

These enterprises have strong teams that are backing innovative business models, with potential to scale. Many participants from the SVS cohort are actively fundraising or looking for corporate and government connections to grow. Based on data from the cohort and insights from three forums held across the target countries, the SDG Venture Scaler has designed a highly contextualized programme tailored to their unique business and operational needs.

The programme curriculum, which officially launched on 4 March, will address common challenges such as the need for fit-for-purpose capital and will help enterprises institutionalize sustainability and impact considerations through tools for impact measurement and management. Enterprises will further benefit from advice on improving their scaling or go-to-market strategies and overall data integrity to enhance their financial and impact accountability.

“Southeast Asia is on track to become the world’s fourth-largest economy, yet only three percent of global impact capital flows into the region. This is a missed opportunity—one that the SDG Venture Scaler is working to change. By strengthening investment-ready enterprises and connecting them with fit-for-purpose funding, we are unlocking private capital for solutions that advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while delivering long-term business value,” remarked Dr. Şebnem Şener, Head of Private Finance for the SDGs, UNDP.

“Southeast Asia presents a vast market opportunity to tackle critical challenges in climate, health care, and education. Enterprises addressing these gaps can unlock significant revenue while driving meaningful impact. The SDG Venture Scaler helps businesses leverage these opportunities to build scalable business models and embed sustainability from the outset. Through mentorship and strategic investments, we accelerate solutions that generate strong financial returns while addressing the region’s most pressing challenges,” remarked Dawn Chan, CEO of CIIP, Temasek Trust.

“Access to funding is a game-changer for enterprises in ASEAN, enabling them to scale solutions that drive both economic growth and measurable impact. Despite Southeast Asia’s vast potential, impact-driven businesses often struggle to secure the right type of funding needed to grow sustainably. The SDG Venture Scaler was designed to equip high-potential enterprises with the investment readiness, networks, and tailored financing strategies they need to thrive,” remarked Guillaume Catella, Co-founder, Creatella Impact.

Through the SDG Venture Scaler, UNDP and its partners are helping enterprises become investment-ready, enabling them to grow, scale, and make a meaningful impact in one of the most dynamic regions in the world. The SDG Venture Scaler was developed by UNDP in partnership with CIIP, with technical support from Creatella Impact and its network of in-country partners: the Women’s Entrepreneurship and Business Support Initiative (WISE), Villgro Philippines, the Social Innovation Acceleration Programme (SIAP), and academic partner Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship (ECE).

Creatella Impact partners with UNDP, CIIP and other organizations to launch SDG Venture Scaler

Creatella Impact is excited to announce its partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Centre for Impact Investing and Practices (CIIP) to launch SDG Venture Scaler. This innovative programme seeks to accelerate growth stage impact businesses and catalyze private investments across Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam, targeting climate, education and health sectors critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This unique accelerator programme combines learning activities in business strategy, impact measurement and management (IMM), and behavioral insights with long-term mentorship, connections to government programmes, investor introductions, and live pitches to facilitate investment deals, helping entrepreneurs scale their businesses and create solutions for sustainable impact.

In addition to UNDP and CIIP, Creatella Impact will collaborate with three in-country partners – Villgro Philippines, WISE in Vietnam, and SIAP in Indonesia – as well as the Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship, as academic business partner of the programme. Together, these organizations will support the initiative’s goal of accelerating the SDG progress and channeling millions in private capital towards growth-stage enterprises focused on climate action, education, and health care.

SDG Venture Scaler will leverage the SDG Investor Platform, a crucial resource that offers market intelligence and identifies high-potential Investment Opportunities Areas (IOAs) guiding investors and businesses toward impactful and financially viable projects.

“This initiative builds on our successful collaboration with UNDP and other partners in Southeast Asia,” said Antonio Vigilante, Chairperson of the Board of Directors at Creatella Impact. “Our role will focus on enhancing the investment readiness of high-impact ventures, helping them scale effectively and secure the necessary capital to drive sustainable development across Southeast Asia.”

The programme aims to identify 30 growth stage enterprises in climate, health and education and help them accelerate their growth and access to financing from fit for purpose sources. By addressing the interconnectedness of climate, health, and education, SDG Venture Scaler aims to create pathways for advancing national development agendas.

Sebnem Sener, Head of Private Finance for the SDGs at UNDP, underscored the new programme’s potential to accelerate sustainable growth: “SDG Venture Scaler can be a critical vehicle for driving private capital into key sectors such as climate action, health care, and education. By linking investors with SDG-aligned enterprises, we’re enabling scalable impact that benefits businesses while addressing urgent development challenges.”

In addition to a business curriculum on how to grow and scale solutions, the participants will receive tailored IMM training, enhancing their ability to integrate impact into their business practices and articulate their impact narratives to investors.

Dawn Chan, CEO of CIIP highlighted the programme’s potential: “The market for impact is large and growing. While impact-oriented financing is needed, it is just as important to bring in other change agents, such as impact-oriented companies and entrepreneurs who are creating positive change in their communities. UNDP, through its country offices, has been working to align private investment in Southeast Asia with sustainable development priorities. Through the SDG Venture Scaler, CIIP aims to equip enterprises with robust IMM practices, empowering them to demonstrate their measurable contributions to the SDGs. This transparency and accountability will make them more attractive to investors, corporate partners, and customers with an interest in solutions that benefit people and the planet.”

The initiative sets ambitious targets for its 2025 conclusion, aiming to significantly improve the investment readiness of participating enterprises and foster a culture of impact within the private sector.

Applications for the SDG Venture Scaler programme are now open here. The programme invites enterprises in climate action, education, and health care sectors from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam to apply. Additionally, key networks and intermediaries with strong business connections in these markets are encouraged to help spread the word.
For more information, please visit SDG Venture Scaler or contact us via email at programs@creatella.org.

Introduction of SheDisrupts Knowledge Platform

Objective: The knowledge platform is being designed to empower women leaders of early-stage, social impact-oriented, tech-enabled startups. It aims to provide them with the necessary tools and training to enhance their knowledge and skills to succeed in their entrepreneurial journey. The training and tools will also be provided to aspiring women entrepreneurs to prepare the future generation of women leaders.

The platform shall help the delivery of the following:

Online Ondemand Training Modules (Modules) for asynchronous delivery (any time, any place)

Online Group Training Course comprised of several modules (Course) for synchronous delivery

Mentorship of startup entrepreneurs with experts (Mentorship)

Interaction of community of startup entrepreneurs (Community)

Knowledge Platform features enabling the delivery of Course and Modules are the main focus of this RFP, along with the features enabling Mentorship and Community interaction.

Course and Modules Structure

Initial number of Modules for asynchronous delivery will be from 10 to 15. Each and all modules can be taken by learners on demand and require an average of 4 – 6 hours. Content for Modules (asynchronous) will be similar to the content for the Course, however delivery methods will vary as the Course will contain additional elements of interactions, including group discussions, assignments, peer feedback etc.

The Course will be an integrated group offer consisting of ~10 modules for synchronous delivery, with each module spanning one week and requiring on average 10 hours of study time. The Course will run for a duration of 10 weeks and require 100 hours of study time. Each module of the Course will consist of 3 lessons with a duration of each lesson 2 hours. On average, for each module, 2-4 hours a week will be required for assignments, group and cohort interactions.

Content of the Modules and the Course is not included in the scope of this RFP and will be separately contracted to an academic business partner. For information purposes, the draft outline of possible Modules and the Course can be found in Annex 2.

Course Delivery

Cohort Size and number of learners: Each cohort will be designed for 300 learners from diverse backgrounds and regions around the world. The platform shall allow for running cohorts in parallel and for accommodating up to 100,000 learner profiles.

Interactive Format: The Course will be delivered in an interactive format, allowing for active participation and engagement. Learners will engage with a new activity every three to eight minutes: questions, quizzes, assessments, polls, idea walls, other gamification elements to increase interactivity and reinforce learning. This will be a uniquely social course in which every participant must commit to teaching and learning from each other.

Diverse Cohort: Cohort’s diversity will provide a unique opportunity to experience new perspectives and strengthen own learning while helping others as well.

Learning Materials: Each module will include a variety of learning materials such as texts, videos, case studies, and other relevant resources.

Case Studies: Real-world case studies will be incorporated into each module to provide practical insights and facilitate application of concepts. Each module will feature 1-2 protagonists: female entrepreneurs/founders of early stage social impact and tech enabled businesses. Alumni of previous SheDisrupts programs may be considered as protagonists. In total, cases of around 10-12 protagonists will be included in the Course.

Group learning: Learners will be placed in groups of up to 6 members. Group learning will facilitate the formation of future co-founding teams of businesses. Within a group and a larger cohort, the learners will discuss the challenges faced by protagonists and debate solutions, learning vital business concepts to apply for their own businesses and careers.

Experiential Learning: The Course will incorporate experiential learning strategies that will allow participants to engage actively in the learning process, provide opportunities for hands-on practice, simulations, case studies, group discussions, and real-world problem-solving exercises for applied learning.

Assignments: Learners will be given assignments to reinforce their understanding and practical application of the course content. Learners will complete some assignments individually and some with the group.

Peer Feedback: Learners will have opportunities to provide feedback and insights to their peers on their assignments, fostering collaboration and a sense of community.

Instructor Feedback: Experienced instructors will provide feedback to selected module assignments and offer guidance to learners, offering expert insights and personalized support (tbd further).

Outcome-Based Design: This will be outcome oriented learning, i.e. the outcome is to either apply learning to the existing business led by the learner, or motivate learner to launch an entrepreneurial initiative and apply the learning.

Localization and multilingual support: Initial version of the course will be in English only. Upon availability of resources, the course will be translated into French, Spanish and Arabic, then to local languages (e.g. Bahasi, Tagalog, Vietnamese etc).

Mentorship program

After completion of the synchronous program, learners may be able to join a mentorship program.

A mentor – entrepreneur matching platform will facilitate the matching and booking of the mentorship calls

A mentorship call is a one-on-one call between a mentor and an entrepreneur, for 1h to 90min, online (on Zoom).

Admins add to the database all the mentors and their information (profile picture, name, company, title, country, biography, sector of expertise, skills).

Mentors will be invited to add their availability regularly on the platform (or to connect their Calendly), to allow startups to book some of these slots. This action should be made extremely easy (possibly without having to even login, and by simply clicking on a link with a parameter identifying the mentor).

Flow for the startups

Login (and verification that the entrepreneur is allowed to book a mentor)

View the list of all mentors

Filter by sector, skill, location, availability (to hide those with no availability)

Clicking on one profile opens the mentor’s page, with their availability (either listed directly in the page, or with a link to their calendly)

If calendly

The user leaves the platform and can book the mentor via their calendly. The link will be automatically created by Calendly

If via the platform

The slot is reserved for this mentor and becomes unavailable

A calendar invite is sent by email with a Google Meet link created automatically

After the date of the call, an email is sent automatically to ask for updates via a short survey (a Google form which will be created by the admins).

The platform may be built with no-code or low-code, but a Single Sign-On is preferable.

Community

Learners in the sync program are asked to join a community.

The community will be a system like Discord or Slack, with channels and private messages.

The platform may be built with no-code or low-code, but a Single Sign-On is preferable.

Features of the community

Reactions (Like, love, insightful, shocked)

Nested messages (at least 1 level, but preferably any number of levels, like Reddit)

Edit and delete (deletion won’t remove the messages under it)

Real time updates: new messages appear at the bottom, without having to refresh the page

Email notifications

Customizable, similarly to Slack, though the level of customization of the notifications can be greatly simplified

Private messages

Allows to easily message anyone.

Admins will be able to create any number of communities (as of now, we will create one community per cohort)

Admin panel

Admins will be able to view, edit or delete all the messages, for moderation purposes

Ban: any learner who commits a breach of the terms and conditions will first receive a warning. If the learner commits another one, they may be banned from the community.

Data visualization: admins can view key KPIs such as the total number of messages, number of messages per day, the learners who post the most messages etc.

Scope of services

Knowledge Platform UX Flow

Synchronous / asynchronous

The user may go through either of the following experiences : synchronous and asynchronous

Synchronous

All participants go through the exact same experience: they have the same course, modules, lessons, assignment etc, in the same order

There are a few programs per year. The course starts for all participants roughly at the same time and each week all participants progress to the next module

Thus, there aren’t any options to choose a course, to skip etc

However participants can go through the module whenever they want during the week or the day. As long as they’ve finished their lessons and assignments, they progress with everyone else to the next module at the end of the week

This synchronous program is the main program, with mentors, calls, perks etc

Real time calls / webinars (on Zoom, with links in the platform)

The learners won’t create their account on the platform. They’ll fill an application form outside of the platform, and they’ll create/join groups. We’ll then copy all the accounts info into our database, and they’ll receive an email.

The email will send them to a page to “finalize/claim their account”, where they can simply add a password to their account.

Asynchronous

To ensure a high number of learners, we’ll also let users learn by themselves, in an “asynchronous” program.

Similar content, and similar assignments

Can be done anytime by the participants

No certification

However, no call / webinar, nor mentors, perks etc

No payment expected from learners for this

Logged out visitors are treated as asynchronous learners and can see all the lessons and assignments.

Group creation flow

When joining a synchronous program, the learners will create or join a group.

Note: the following specs are most likely complicated. A no-code or low-code alternative can be considered.

Flow

After applying for the program and being accepted (with an email / WA / SMS), participants will go to a page to help them form a group

Participants can either (1) create a new group or (2) ask to join a different one

To create a group / project / startup, a participant needs to click “Create new group” and input the same info as above:

Project name, Describe the project: its value proposition …, Describe the problem addressed, Progress reached (if any: market validation, traction …), Funds raised / investment, Do you have a cofounder?

Vocabulary: we’ll call “initiator” the participants who created a group

(Note: necessary step, as there may not be enough people with an idea)

Participants can only create 1 group, but they can edit its details

Initiators can still join someone else’s group, as long as no one else has joined their group. If they get accepted by other group initiator, their initiated group is removed.

To join a group / project

Participants can see the list of all groups available and can see all key info about the project and the other people who have already been accepted within the group

They can apply to join a group (as long as the group can still accept new applicants)

The initiator of the group receives a notification, reviews the applicant profile, and if they like it, they can accept the requestor in their group.

They have 24h to accept the person. After 24h, they’re automatically rejected.

Participants can only apply to join 1 group at a time

Participants accepted into a group can’t leave it (except if they drop out of the program)

A group can only have 6 participants max, but can have an unlimited number of applicants. Once 6 people have been accepted, no one can apply to join it.

A group needs to have a min of 3 participants to be accepted, at the deadline.

After a certain number of days (ex 4 days), most groups should be finalized. There’s an extra 3 days to finish forming groups

Change in rules:

Any participant can then leave (even if they’ve been accepted) and apply to another group.

Max group size becomes 7 people

If there are only 2 people (or fewer) left without a group at the deadline (they can’t form a group together): the increase in max size to 7 should solve it.

If there are too many groups: allowing participants to leave should solve the situation. Once initiators are alone in their group, they’ll then join another group

If there are too few groups (and other rare cases where any participant hasn’t joined a group by the deadline): admins will finish creating groups manually

If someone doesn’t like their group, they can contact the admin, and they may be reassigned to another group manually

The following diagram presents the UX flow of all the different screens.

The future of entrepreneurship in Southeast Asia is digital, socially influential, and powered by women. Creatella Impact and Global Affairs Canada are proud to present “SheDisrupts Malaysia 2023”, a fully virtual venture competition, mentorship, and pre-accelerating training program for women entrepreneurs in Malaysia. Applications are now open at https://shedisrupts.org/malaysia2023/ .

Unlocking the potential of women entrepreneurs in Malaysia

What does sustainable development have in common with tech-driven, female entrepreneurship? They both represent the future of one of the most promising economies of Southeast Asia.

After successfully implementing SheDisrupts programs in Indonesia and Vietnam, Creatella Impact is proAfter successfully implementing SheDisrupts programs twice in Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, Creatella Impact is proud to join forces with Global Affairs Canada and Social Value Malaysia to organize SheDisrupts Malaysia, a new venture competition, mentorship, and pre-acceleration programme in Malaysia. The programme also received support from FGV Holdings Berhad, Malaysia’s leading global agribusiness which is committed to continuously drive a sustainable business.

A particular focus of this program will be to facilitate more gender lens investments (GLI) into women-led startups in Malaysia. The program will leverage women entrepreneurs, investors, ecosystem enablers, and agencies that support women entrepreneurship, to support ambitious women entrepreneurs in Malaysia to scale their businesses and raise growth capital. The SheDisrupts community offers not only technical knowledge and skills, but it also creates a safe space for women entrepreneurs to connect, learn, collaborate, and grow with each other.

Along with mentorship and world-class training, participating startups will have the opportunity to get an entry to Techstars, receive AWS credits from AWS EdStart, fee-free processing with Stripe, a 2-hour design workshop with Styliff Tech, up to 82,000 USD savings with Hubspot, 50,000 USD worth of Segment credits, 10,000 USD worth of Freshwork credit, up to 20,000 USD from Creatella, and software donation from Oracle Netsuite.

Addressing gender equality has emerged as a critical challenge for Malaysia, with significant implications for its economic progress. Despite women constituting 48.4% of the country’s working-age population, their representation in the labor market remains limited, with only 55.5% participating in 2021, and a mere 39% contributing to the labor force. The Asia Pacific region stands to gain an astounding $4.5 trillion annually in GDP by 2025 through accelerated strides towards gender parity. Recognizing the role of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) as vital contributors to Malaysia’s economy, it is imperative to harness the potential of these enterprises for fostering gender balance. With over 1.15 million MSMEs, accounting for more than 97% of the nation’s businesses and 38.2% of GDP, they employ 7.25 million people, making up 41.8% of total enterprises, with 52% of employees being women. Notably, women ownership of total MSMEs stands at 20.8%. Embracing gender equality within this sector could yield profound economic and social benefits, charting a course toward a more inclusive and prosperous Malaysia.

The High Commissioner of Canada in Malaysia, Wayne Robson, fully supports unlocking the potential of female-led entrepreneurship in Malaysia. He believes that the full and equal participation of women in the economy is not just the right thing to do; it’s the smart thing to do.

By providing support to women-led startups, “SheDisrupts Malaysia 2023” programme strives to narrow the existing gaps and contribute to the nation’s economic advancement. With gender equality being a critical concern, especially in light of statistics showing limited female representation in the labor market despite their substantial portion of the working-age population, programmes like “SheDisrupts Malaysia 2023” are crucial.

“Social Value Malaysia’s active partnership in the SheDisrupt program exemplifies its commitment towards sustainability, social impact, and social value. As a pioneering entity in social value and impact management and measurement in Malaysia, SVM recognises the importance of fostering equitable opportunities in the tech industry for women entrepreneurs”, said Jane Chang, co-founder of Social Value Malaysia.

About the programme and the eligibility criteria

The programme features a venture competition, mentorships, and pre-acceleration training for women-led and women-owned innovative startups. It is fully conducted in a remote and digital format, connecting participants with seasoned mentors, judges and facilitators from Malaysia, Southeast Asia, Europe, USA and Canada.

“We are proud to continue the series of the SheDisrupts programs in Southeast Asia and support talented women entrepreneurs from Malaysia, who lead promising and impact oriented startups. Via SheDisrupts programs, we promote a paradigm shift from including women to empowering them as influential agents of change. At the same time, we contribute to bridging the gap in Sustainable Development Goals and achieving gender equality” said Karen Vardanyan, Co-Executive Director of Creatella Impact.

The program will commence with online application and venture competition from August 28 to October 8, 2023. Up to fifty teams will be selected for the mentoring and judging sessions, scheduled from October 23 to November 10, 2023. The mentoring sessions are designed to provide founders and their teams with essential business and pitching skills, as well as offer a platform to showcase their businesses to an international audience, including investors.

The 20 most outstanding participants will then be invited to join an intense 3-week pre-acceleration program starting on November 20, 2023, which will cover topics including business development, technology, marketing, and financial skills, as well as topics specific to impact measurement and women’s economic empowerment. Experienced academic facilitators from lead business schools as well as practitioners from Social Value Malaysia and other organizations will facilitate pre-acceleration training sessions.

At the end of the pre-acceleration training, all participants will pitch live in front of GLI investors and receive continuous support with investor introductions.

The application criteria for the venture competition at a glance:

The program welcomes applications from early-stage startups with a clearly developed product idea and some traction, and with at least one woman among the founders or in a leadership role, with women having 20% or more ownership of the entity. The program targets entrepreneurs who are either from Malaysia or target their products and services to the Malaysian market. Businesses need to address market inefficiencies and offer solutions that contribute to one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and preferably have a positive impact on gender parity and women’s economic empowerment and are tech or innovation-driven. The program is industry agnostic: candidates may come from the world of health-tech, edtech, fintech – or any other.

The organizers encourage women entrepreneurs from rural provinces and component cities, as well as minority representatives to apply for this program. Entrepreneurs and founding teams interested in taking part in the programme can apply at https://shedisrupts.org/malaysia2023/ . The application deadline is October 8, 2023, 23:59 MYT.

Moonshot Ventures and Creatella Impact presented SheDisrupts Indonesia 2023 Demo Day: Showcasing 26 of Indonesia’s most promising impact startups led by women.

On the 24th of March 2023, 26 mission-driven, women-led startups pitched online to investors and startup ecosystem partners in Indonesia and beyond as part of the “SheDisrupts Indonesia 2023” program.

“ SheDisrupts was conceived to support and showcase how women-led startups can leverage innovation and technology to disrupt Indonesia’s most challenging social and environmental issues. Leading a startup is inherently difficult, but women entrepreneurs typically face additional barriers and are often overlooked by investors. The resounding success of the program and its replication beyond Indonesia is testimony to the overwhelming potential of women-led startups – in building bold business solutions to the most pressing problems.” said Tom Schmittzehe, Managing Partner of Moonshot Ventures.

The program was initiated by Moonshot Ventures and Creatella Impact, in partnership with Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UN Women, and Monk’s Hill Ventures, to empower Indonesian women entrepreneurs to build and scale innovative and tech-enabled business solutions to complex social and environmental issues in Indonesia.

“In 2021, the SheDisrupts program was launched in Indonesia. Its success inspired us to replicate the program in other countries of the region – and we are excited to return to Indonesia for this second 2023 cohort, and to continue supporting the most promising impact oriented startups and increasing their chances of success.” said Guillaume Catella, Co-Executive Director of Creatella Impact.

The program kicked off in January 2023 with a first phase in the form of a venture competition. 54 startups were selected for this phase, which included extensive mentorship with experienced impact investors, entrepreneurs and advisors from around the world.

“As a female founder, I am delighted to be a part of the SheDisrupts program. This initiative equips us with the necessary skills and confidence to excel as entrepreneurs. It’s not just a startup competition, but it also provides valuable mentorship and networking opportunities with other like-minded individuals. I appreciated the valuable insights on each topic and enjoyed learning about all of them.” said Vensia Tjhin, Founder and CEO of Aronawa.

Building on this first phase, 26 promising startups were then invited to join a second phase consisting of a 3-week pre-acceleration training.

“The 26 ventures, who represent a broad spectrum from health tech and education to energy and financial services, have demonstrated their ability to drive sustainable development alongside their businesses. We firmly believe in the potential of these companies as they become role models for gender-inclusive businesses and impact-driven economic development”, said Sujala Pant, Deputy Resident Representative, UNDP Indonesia.

The training included lectures, workshops, group work and 1-on-1 mentoring on business, technology and impact-related topics, with a strong focus on gender issues and women empowerment.

” We are very delighted to extend our support for the 26 driven women founders in SheDisrupts Indonesia 2023 cohort. At The Sasakawa Peace Foundation, we strongly believe that supporting women entrepreneurs and women led businesses will create a multiplier effect to the improvement of lives for women and girls. By supporting SheDisrupts Indonesia, we want to take part in creating more opportunities for women founders and women led startups all over Indonesia to learn and grow their startups. We are thoroughly impressed with all the participants who have successfully advanced their way to the Demo Day and hope that they continue to soar and create more impact with their businesses in years to come. ” said Ayaka Matsuno, Director of Gender Investment and Innovation Program at The Sasakawa Peace Foundation.

The training concluded on Friday 24th March with a virtual demo day, which was attended by more than 100 investors, mentors, and partners.

The future of entrepreneurship in Southeast Asia is digital, impactful, and powered by women, as much as men. Challenging gender norms with this vision, and after successful inaugural cohorts in Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, SheDisrupts returns to Indonesia for a second cohort of its groundbreaking support program for women-led startups.

Applications to SheDisrupts Indonesia 2023 are now open at shedisrupts.org

Women Entrepreneurs Face Greater Barriers

Women founders face greater barriers compared to men to launch and grow their startups. Among others, women typically struggle with gender biases, time and mobility restrictions due to traditional family roles and skill deficits, as well as less access to senior business networks. Those who are able to overcome these hurdles must then contend with a stark lack of funding and appropriate support for their fledgling businesses. Women-led startups receive only a tiny fraction of the venture capital funding available, and typically less than 1 in 5 participants in accelerators and incubators are women, with most programs not catering to their particular needs. As one of the largest programs in Indonesia dedicated to supporting women-led startups, SheDisrupts addresses these gaps.

“With less than 5% of venture capital funding in Southeast Asia going to women-led startups, and as one of the most active impact investors in Indonesia, Moonshot Ventures is focused on addressing this issue and supporting Indonesian women founders.

SheDisrupts is unique in being designed around the distinctive needs of women entrepreneurs, in bringing together the best features of top global startup programs, and in representing such a broad coalition of cross-sector partners working together to support Indonesia’s emerging women leaders and changemakers,” commented Tom Schmittzehe, Managing Partner at Moonshot Ventures.

Program Partners From Across Sectors

The program is made possible by a partnership of organizations across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, who share a commitment to promoting women entrepreneurs. Spearheaded by Creatella Impact and Moonshot Ventures, two regional impact investors, SheDisrupts Indonesia 2023 is supported by global and regional champions of gender equality and women’s empowerment including the UNDP, UN Women, and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation. These are joined by leading investors and tech corporations from around the world, including Techstars, AWS, Stripe, Hubspot, Google, and Oracle – as well as major regional players like Monk’s Hill Ventures and Xendit.

Over 30 such partners have already contributed to SheDisrupts in a variety of ways. This includes via their employees who volunteer to mentor the entrepreneurs, or to conduct training on pertinent topics, such as product development or impact management. Partners also provide generous perks and prizes to the startups, and help to fund the program.

“SheDisrupts is deeply collaborative, integrating inputs from a number of partner organizations who offer their expertise and resources to the participating teams. The model has been tested and liked by startups in Indonesia as well as other countries. We consistently incorporate feedback, refine our offer with innovative elements to be the partner of choice for the women led social impact startups in their acceleration journey.,” remarked Karen Vardanyan, Co-Executive Director at Creatella Impact.

A Program Specifically Designed For Women Founders

“Here at The Sasakawa Peace Foundation, we believe in promoting women’s empowerment through entrepreneurship and gender-lense investment, as investing in women creates multiplier effects and unlock the untapped resources, joining the force to make the world a better place. Therefore, through SheDisrupts Indonesia, we hope to support more women-led businesses to thrive and create more sustainable impact for the society,” stated Ayaka Matsuno, Director of Gender Investment and Innovation Program at The Sasakawa Peace Foundation.

In response, SheDisrupts is a startup support program specifically designed around the needs of women entrepreneurs. Based on their extensive feedback, the program includes a range of distinguishing features. For instance, it is run online and part-time, to allow flexible and remote participation. It offers more emphasis on skills development, with up to 4 weeks of training across a range of essential startup topics and delivered with greater weight around collaborative team-building. And – among many other women-first features – it includes much more mentoring, from up to 100 business leaders, mostly women.

“We need a game changer in order to reach gender equality and to empower women, disruptive technology and innovation fits the bill,” said Dwi Faiz, Head of Programmes, UN Women Indonesia. “Through our Together Digital Programme, UN Women is excited to support this competition that provides opportunities to innovative women-led start-ups to find new solutions to existing challenges and enhance sustainable and profitable business models to empower women.”

SheDisrupts also helps open the doors to investment opportunities for its women founders. In addition to $150,000 of in-kind perks and prizes offered to every team, the programme includes multiple occasions for the entrepreneurs to showcase their businesses to investors, such as via the Demo Day where over 100 selected investors are invited to watch live pitches from participating startups.

“It’s essential that more women entrepreneurs are encouraged and supported at the beginning of their startup journeys, and introduced to potential future investors – it’s at this very early stage that women founders can benefit the most,” affirmed Susli Lie, Partner at venture capital firm Monk’s Hill Ventures. “When I was a startup founder, there were no tailored programs for women entrepreneurs in Indonesia. Today, as a VC investor, I am even more convinced of the need to support and encourage more women founders to pursue their entrepreneurial journey.”

The structure of the program is also original. It builds on global best practices and combines elements of different types of support programs. Over 3 months, a cohort aimed at an initial 200 women-led startups are guided through 3 distinct phases. Founders must meet performance hurdles to graduate from one phase to the next – but every team that applies automatically qualifies and benefits from the first phase. This first phase is similar to a venture competition, with support focused around how best to pitch to investors. The second phase shifts its focus to extensive mentoring around each startup’s most pressing strategic and operational needs. Then a third phase resembles an accelerator program with up to 4 weeks of cohort and team based skills training that ends with a Demo Day, where the founders pitch their businesses live to investors.

Focusing on the importance of women’s empowerment in economic development, Nila Murti, Officer-in-Charge, Innovative Financing Lab said, “Women are one of the key drivers in formalizing the country’s economy, especially from the increased participation of women in the SME sector. Continuing from the success of She Disrupts Indonesia 2021, coupled with growing entrepreneurial spirit among women, it is vital now more than ever in fostering collaboration between women founders, especially in increasing their awareness of the importance of placing sustainability and impact within their businesses and in their entrepreneurial journey. As the 2030 Agenda closes in, She Disrupts Indonesia 2023 plays a part in pushing women founders towards creating impactful contributions to Indonesia’s sustainable development, building back from COVID-19, and towards the SDGs.”

How To Apply

Applications to SheDisrupts Indonesia 2023 are now open until January 15, 2023. The program will run from 30 January, 2023 to 24 March, 2023 – and teams can learn more and apply at shedisrupts.org.

SheDisrupts Indonesia is open to early-stage startups with at least one woman among the founders or in a leadership role. They must have a clearly developed product idea and some traction, and target Indonesia as their primary market. Also, their commercial solutions need to be tech- or innovation-driven, and contribute to one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. However, the program is industry agnostic – teams may come from domains such as health-tech, edtech, fintech, sustainability – or any other.

Women entrepreneurs are encouraged to apply from rural provinces and cities beyond Jakarta, as well as from minority groups.

“Advancing women’s entrepreneurship and inclusive ecosystem development is at the core of our work at the Sasakawa Peace Foundation. The WE Rise-SDP initiative provides a robust platform for women entrepreneurs in the Philippines to get the financial and non-financial support they need to grow their businesses, while striving for the double bottom line of financial sustainability and social impact. As one of our first initiatives in the Philippines, we are thrilled to be a part of a consortium of like-minded, impact-driven investment and entrepreneurship support partners to co-design WE Rise-SDP 2022.

It was a sincere honour and pleasure to have the opportunity to work with an amazing group of talented, growth and impact-focused women Founders and their teams. You are an inspiration to us all! We believe and hope the strong community of mentors, investors, and corporate and public partners that have come together for WE Rise-SDP will continue to support all the women-led businesses to grow. These are exciting times, and we look forward to deepening our partnerships in the Philippines.” – said Ayaka Matsuno, Director, Gender Investment and Innovation Program, The Sasakawa Peace Foundation.

The 20 selected startups were selected after a 2-round, fully virtual venture competition during which 38 startups pitched in front of expert mentors and judges. All participating startups received 150 hours of mentorship with experienced entrepreneurs, digital specialists and investors from the Philippines, Southeast Asia, Europe and USA.

“The quality and diversity of the social impact startups from The Philippines have been remarkable. It’s an honour to be part of the mentoring journey. These ventures are changing the landscape of the Philippines startup scene and we can’t wait to see what they do next.

“Our dual objectives are to cover the SDGs gap and to bridge the gender gap, to connect founders to the world of knowledge related to designing, building and running social impact businesses, enhancing leadership competencies of their leaders. We have been impressed with the quality of work of startups, problems they resolve and the impact they intend to achieve via their businesses in the Philippines and will continuously support this great cohort to raise funds and grow their businesses.” – said Antonio Vigilante, Chairperson, Board of Directors of Creatella Impact.

The future of entrepreneurship in Southeast Asia is digital, socially influential, and powered by women. On this International Women’s Day, Creatella Impact and Villgro Philippines, in partnership with the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), Investing in Women (an initiative of the Australian Government) (IW) and UN Women, are proud to present “WE Rise – SheDisrupts Philippines 2022”, a fully virtual venture competition, mentorship, and pre-accelerating training program for women entrepreneurs in the Philippines. Applications are now open at https://she-disrupts.org/werise .

Unlocking the potential of women entrepreneurs in the Philippines

What does sustainable development have in common with tech-driven, female entrepreneurship? They both represent the future of one of the most promising economies of Southeast Asia.

After successfully implementing SheDisrupts programs in Indonesia and Vietnam, Creatella Impact is proud to join forces with Villgro Philippines to organize WE Rise – SheDisrupts Philippines, a new venture competition, mentorship, and pre-acceleration programme in the Philippines, in partnership with the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), Investing in Women (IW) and UN Women. A particular focus of this program will be to facilitate more gender lens investments (GLI) into women-led startups in the Philippines. The program will leverage Villgro Philippines’ WE Rise Community of women entrepreneurs, investors, ecosystem enablers, and agencies that support women entrepreneurship, to support ambitious women entrepreneurs in the Philippines to scale their businesses and raise growth capital. The community offers not only technical knowledge and skills, but is also creating a safe space for Women Entrepreneurs to connect, learn, collaborate, and grow with each other.

Along with mentorship and world-class training, participating startups will have the opportunity to get cash prizes in the form of a non-dilutive capital of up to 10,000 USD from the program partners, an entry to Techstars, AWS credits from AWS EdStart, fee-free processing with Stripe, a 2-hour design workshop with Styliff Tech, up to 82,000 USD savings with Hubspot, 50,000 USD worth of Segment credits, 10,000 USD worth of Freshwork credit, up to 20,000 USD from Creatella, and software donation from Oracle Netsuite.

In the Philippines, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) account for up to 99.6% of total enterprises and employ at least 62% of the Philippines workforce. One in 4 MSMEs are women-owned with women entrepreneurs making up the majority of the top sectors, 88% in retail/wholesale, 70% in food processing, 74% in materials and manufacturing and 44% in agriculture. Ironically, women founders in the Philippines are facing higher barriers as entrepreneurs. Among the gaps are lack of knowledge and business skills, lack of access to finance, limited connections, and more attention to housework and child or elderly care compared to men. With the efforts of Villgro Philippines and Creatella Impact, the combined “WE Rise – SheDisrupts Philippines” programme will help bridge the existing gaps by supporting women-led startups in the Philippines.

About the programme and the eligibility criteria

The programme features a venture competition, mentorships, and pre-acceleration training for women-led and women-owned innovative startups. It is fully conducted in a remote and digital format, connecting participants with seasoned mentors, judges and facilitators from the Philippines, Southeast Asia, Europe and USA.

The program will commence with online application and venture competition from March 8 to April 4, 2022. Up to fifty teams will be selected for the mentoring and judging sessions, scheduled from 4 to 29 April, 2022. The mentoring sessions are designed to provide founders and their teams with essential business and pitching skills, as well as offer a platform to showcase their businesses to an international audience, including investors.

The 20 most outstanding participants will then be invited to join an intense 3-week pre-acceleration program starting on May 9, 2022, which will cover topics including business development, technology, marketing, and financial skills, as well as topics specific to impact measurement and women’s economic empowerment. At the end of the pre-acceleration training, all participants will pitch live in front of GLI investors. WE Rise – SheDisrupts Philippines will run from April – June 2022.

The application criteria for the venture competition at a glance:

The program welcomes applications from early-stage startups ideally with a clearly developed product idea and some traction, and with at least one woman among the founders or in a leadership role, with women having 20% ownership of the entity. The program targets entrepreneurs who are either from the Philippines or target their products and services to the Philippines market.

For entrepreneurs and founding teams who are interested in taking part in the programme, please apply at https://she-disrupts.org/werise/ . The application deadline is April 4, 2022, at 23:59 PhST.
